Number 4 Rey Mysterio
At number 4 we have Rey Mysterio. Entering the Rumble at number 2, Rey has one of the most emotional wins in Royal Rumble history as his win was dedicated to the late great Eddie Guerrero, who had passed away late the previous year.
It’s interesting that it’s never seen as big a deal if you win the event from the number 2 position as it is from the number 1 position, when in reality both entrant numbers 1 and 2 are in the match the exact same time.
The fans were desperate for Rey Rey to win this one, and WWE gave us all the feel good moment…even if they didn’t especially want to. WWE had planned for Randy Orton to go on to the main event of Wrestlemania, and in typical WWE fashion they would later have Randy Orton defeat Rey to replace him in the main event match at Mania.
Of course there was a happy ending as fan displeasure would see that Rey would be added back into the match before we reached Wrestlemania and Rey would go on to win the World Heavyweight title in a needlessly short bout.
It’s funny how WWE has had to juggle Wrestlemania main events a few times because they go against fan wishes with winners. This example with Rey is one, but they didn’t learn their lessons and had to play around with things after Batista won in what should have been Daniel Bryan’s year and then they would later do this exact same thing again with Becky Lynch being the people’s favourite, but WWE forcing their pick Charlotte Flair into the mix much the same way they forced Orton in here, before the crowbarred in wrestler just loses to the fan’s pick anyway!
