Tips For Starting A Travel Vlog On YouTube

Shoot Too Much Footage Rather Than Too Little

When you’re first vlogging it can be very easy to be overexcited that you’re filming here there and everywhere, and with that you may find that you rush at some of the sights and locations and don’t get enough useable footage for your vlog. When you’re at a location you think is worth vlogging at, just take 15 seconds to film a still shot or a slow pan of the location. This will help your vlog loads as it will show the audience the place you’re experiencing, and give you something you can add a voice over to if you wish to.

Also get in the habit of giving yourself a few seconds after you hit record before you start pointing this out or narrating that. I’ve found I have loads of footage where as soon as I hit the record button I’m talking over it or moving the camera here or there. Allow a few seconds to make sure you’re properly focussed or in frame or the lighting is adjusted as you want and then do what you will I’m the shot.

And don’t forget to record your thoughts or reactions to things along the way. You’re on vacation and it’s all exciting, and even if you don’t want a vlog where you’re on screen talking about stuff all the time, it can be so handy if only for your own reference to record your thoughts on your location…whilst you’re there! I have pieces of footage which I’ve looked back at later and thought ‘why did I film this?’ Or that I don’t remember the context or what I filmed or the name of it. A quick extra record to keep notes will help you remember why you thought something was good to be filmed in the first place.
