Doctor Who fans, the Timeless Child storyline was very controversial for a number of reasons, but one of the biggest reasons is it suggested that the Doctor isn’t really a Time Lord.
But let’s talk about this for a moment.
In a show where the true identity of the lead character has been such a mystery that the name of the show revolves around it, it was perhaps a storyline that had grown too big over fifty plus years for any answer to be satisfactory.
But why are fifty plus years they decided to reveal that everything we thought we knew about the Doctor was a lie was crazy.
The Doctors which throughout the history of the show had always been distinguished by a number. Fourth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Tenth, Thirteenth etc… But whilst the show in recent years had already messed up the numbering saying there was a secret one, the Timeless Child storyline suggested there was a minimum of eight in carnations before what we thought was the first.
We also knew that a Timelord could have thirteen lives, but this was thrown out of the window.
As well as the idea that the Doctor was even a Timelord.
So, if this wasn’t all shocking enough, what was the new origin and history that they gave us? Vagueness and lack of clarity.
The Doctor was now discovered as a child outside a portal to another unknown dimensions.
They could regenerate seemingly an unlimited number of times.
We still have no idea where the name Doctor originally came from or what the child was known as before being known as the Doctor.
But we do know that at least one of the eight incarnations of the Doctor was known as The Doctor, but it’s now unexplained what the First Doctor thought their real name was,
why it was ever a secret that they couldn’t tell others, or how or why they decided to start calling themselves Doctor.
This Timeless Child storyline also gave a much more tragic and upsetting origin to the character as a lost, parentless child who was experimented on until some random person could steal the secret of the ability to regenerate.
But as for who they were? Where they came from? How many lives they had previous had? It’s all still a mystery.
People wanted it answered what the Doctor’s real name was.
Instead the timeless child erased that the Doctor was a real Timelord, made it so we now have seen much less of the Doctor’s life told on screen, have no idea what planet or dimension the Doctor is really from…
And worst of all?
They still didn’t answer what the Doctor’s name really was.
