6 Incredible Facts About Christian Cage’s Historic Impact Championship Win

3. Christian is the first person to win an Impact World Championship in a non Impact wrestling ring

Christian Cage won the Impact World Championship on the debut episode of AEW Rampage which makes him the first man to win the Impact World Championship in a non Impact ring. History buffs may point to Jeff Jarrett losing the World Championship to Ray González at Juicio Final 2005, but this Championship win wasn’t recognised at the time it happened and has only been recognised retroactively by the NWA. Also this was an NWA World Championship title change and not an Impact Wrestling World Championship title change.

2. Both Christian and Edge returned from retirment one year apart during Royal Rumble matches, but despite this Christian was the first to capture a World Championship

Edge shocked the world when he returned to active competition in the WWE at the 2020 Royal Rumble. He would then go on to have a feud with Randy Orton where he was injured and the WWE had Christian as part of the storyline supposedly coming out of retirment himself to defend Edge. This match of Christian’s was very much a non starter and was seen just as the WWe furthering Edge’s storyline with Orton.

History would repeat itself for the multi-time former tag team champions as Christian officially ended his retirement by returning to active competition in the WWE in the 2021 Royal Rumble, a match which was won by Edge a year after he had made his return.

Unfortunately the brief reunion between Edge and Christian would be a one and done deal as the WWE were unable to make a deal with Christian who would a short time later shock the wrestling world by jumping ship to AEW much like he had been the first significant WWE star to jump ship from WWE to TNA many years earlier.

Edge would go on to face Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan in the main event of Wrestlemania, but Edge’s return story to chase the World Championship failed to meet expectations and a Edge wasn’t rewarded with a World Championship win despite still being able to main event a Wrestlemania.

As such it means that Christian jumping to AEW gave him the opportunity to beat Edge to World Championship glory when he defeated Impact/TNA World Champion Kenny Omega to capture the belts. Of course many wouldn’t consider a Impact World Championship win as prestigious as a WWE Championship win which Edge will continue to pursue, even if Christian has the bragging rights of winning the double belts from the current AEW World Champion on the first edition of the new Rampage show.

1. Christian Cage becomes the first person to be TNA/Impact, ECW, NWA and WWE World Heavyweight World Champion

This win for Christian made him the first person in history to have held the NWA, Impact/TNA, WWE and ECW World Championships. AJ Styles has been NWA, TNA/Impact and WWE World Champion, and Rob Van Dam has been ECW, WWE and TNA Champion as has Bobby Lashley, and there have been plenty of people who have won two of the championships on this list, such as Raven, Mick Foley and John Morrison, but Christian is the first person to ever hold this combination of World Championships.
