What if Superman and Batman’s Mothers Had Different Names?

Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice
Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice

When Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice released at the cinemas it was something of a controversial film. Some people liked it, and others not so much. Despite all the love and campaigning for The Snyder Cut of Justice League to come out and the Snyderverse to continue, it doesn’t change that the initial reception to the second Snyder film was mixed at best.

Some found the film long, or that Superman took a backseat to Batman, or that some bits were confusing until the even longer ultimate edition came out. The biggest criticism though was that the idea of Batman fighting Superman was solved when Batman realised Superman’s mother had the same name as his own mother.

I’m sure when this idea was first come up with, it seems like a stroke of genius. Oh course! Batman will recognise that he and Superman are more alike than not when a helpless Superman begs Batman to rescue his mother Martha. When Batman realised that he too was once helpless looking up as his mother Martha was in danger it changed everything for Batman.

That’s the best way I can articulate it but still sounds like Batman changed his entire view of trying to kill the alien Superman who brawled with Zod through buildings that would have killed thousands…just because their mothers had the same name.

DC have been very open with their lack of support for he Snyderverse and even mocked this very idea in the animated Teen Titans Go the Movie when Batman and Superman stop fighting and start hugging when they realise both mommies have the same name.

So what if…Superman‘s mother wasn’t the same as Batman’s?

Let’s explore this idea and what the consequences would have been if mother Kent had been Janet Kent instead of Martha.

Superman is weakened by a Kryptonite gas bomb and Batman is stood over him with a Kryptonite spear. Batman is about to impale him and…

Superman: Save Janet…

Boom! Batman doesn’t hesitate and stabs Superman through the neck. Lois Lane runs in and screams “Noooooooo! Why did you kill him? Didn’t you hear what he said?”

Batman: He said save Janet. I don’t know who that is.

Smoke bomb and whoosh Batman disappears into the night.

Then Lex Luther still uses Zoe’s body to create Doomsday on the crashed Kryptonion ship. Batman stands outside of where Superman fell and Doomsday appears. Without any hope, Wonder Woman still shows up and probably would have defeated Doomsday anyway. And Batman would have still been next to useless against Doomsday anyway.

Roll credits.

But let’s give Batman a tad more credit here. He is a hero after all.

Say it goes this way…

Superman: Save Janet…

Batman: What did you say?

Superman: Save Janet…she’s my mother.

Batman: My mother was also called Martha.

Then Batman realises that Superman, just as he did, also has a mother and cannot go through with killing Superman. Batman then has a moment of realisation. The Joker must also have had a mother. As would the Penguin. And would this also mean the Riddler had a mother too?

Without hesitation Batman rushes away from Supeman to Arkham and sets his entire rogue gallery free from their cells.

Meanwhile Superman is left to take on Doomsday and gets killed defeating Doomsday and leaving Wonder Woman to clean up Batman’s mess as he’s now having play dates with Two Face and Mr Freeze and reminiscing about their mothers together.

Or for a third and final take on what would have happened if Superman’s mother didn’t have the same name as Batman’s mother…

Superman: Save Janet…

Batman: What did you say?

Lois Lane runs in and screams “that is his mother’s name”

Batman realises he has a mother too and let’s Superman up. Superman is annoyed at Bruce for wasting his time whilst his mother is in danger and simply takes the opportunity to burn Batman to a crisp.

And boom, that’s how Superman would become the Homelander like evil Superman that was teased in the flash forward dream sequences that Batman had.

And that is what I believe would have been the results had Superman and Batman not had mothers who had the same Christian name.
