If you’re looking for a pleasant National Trust building to visit in the Bristol area, you should consider checking out Tyntesfield House.
The house has a lot to see and is certainly one of the better buildings of this type I’ve been to, and I say this as someone who finds that once you’ve seen one of these National Trust buildings you’ve seen them all.
The building kinda reminded me of the mansion from the Resident Evil video game, or as one of the other visitors put it, ‘it feels like the board game Cluedo should be set here’.
The building has a lot of rooms to explore, and during our visit a nice old gentleman was sat playing the piano in the main hallway below the staircase to the upstairs.
Highlights included the billiards room which has a full-sized billiards table, and you can imagine the master of the house and some of his friends would go there to smoke cigars (there was a display of them laid out on a table) and talk about men’s matters. The library was also impressive with it’s large collection of books and as with a lot of the rooms at the property, it didn’t just feel that you were looking upon the possessions of the wealthy. Somehow this felt more like a real home and that you could see how they used the spaces and lived there.
There is also a chapel on site and the stained glass windows were well designed and a highlight. Amusingly there was someone tending to a chandelier whilst we visited which meant we got some unique photos inside the chapel which most wouldn’t…not that someone up a ladder is the hot photo everyone is after getting.
The grounds of the house offer a lot to walk through and there are areas where you can sit for a picnic and admire the gardens. There is also a dried-up lake there which is a sight to see. It was a pleasant day and there were lots of well maintained flowerbeds, bushes and pretty views for photo opportunities.
