Vegas Pro: How to Fix Missing Audio Tracks

Vegas Pro: How to Fix Missing Audio Tracks

Vegas Pro is one of the most popular video editing softwares available for PC. Originally made by Sony, but in recent years, taken over by Magix, the software is editor of choice for many filmmakers and content creators.

But what do you do if you find that you import a video and the video track comes up, but the audio track doesn’t? It can be puzzling if you know the video has an audio track that you can hear just by playing the video file.

Don’t worry, as here are three methods to try and hopefully, you’ll be back to editing in no time.

Method 1:

The issue may be that your video file was created using an older now legacy codec or one that a newer version of Vegas Pro doesn’t like. This is how you can address the problem.

Looking at the image below, you’ll see my screen from Vegas Pro 22, which is the latest edition at the time of writing.

You’ll note that I have a video track on my timeline, but that an audio track isn’t present.

To fix the issue, select ‘Options’ from the top of the screen and then click on ‘Preferences’.

Next, choose the File I/O, and make sure ‘Enable legacy AVC decoding’ is ticked.

Click ‘Apply’ and close the Preferences.

You’ll need to close Vegas Pro and restart it, but hopefully, once done, you’ll see your audio tracks when you import a video.

Method 2:

Something that may be worth trying to begin with is right clicking the video that has the missing audio and clicking on ‘Add Missing Stream For Selected Event’.

If you find this works then great, but if you have to do this for files repeatedly, it may be worth trying one of the other methods as well.

Method 3:

This didn’t work for me, but may do if you’re using an older version of Vegas Pro than I was.

Head over to your C Drive.

Then go to Program Files and find the folder for Vegas.

Inside the folder for your version of Vegas Pro there will be a folder called ‘FileIO Plug-Ins’

Inside this there will a folder called ‘compoundplug’. Rename this folder by adding a number at the end. For example ‘compoundplug1’.

I’ve read that some found this resolved the issue, but as I mentioned, it did not work for me.

If you find this doesn’t help or that other issues arise, but simply rename it again and remove the 1.

So there you go! Hopefully, this has resolved the issue for you.
