5: Make Notes and Write Things Down

adult, diary, journal

So you’re going to the festival and whilst there you see twenty other groups perform, attend three workshops and also jam last at night and get up early to explore the local area. It’s a big whirlwind of activity and when it’s over it’ll be the talk of your life for the next few weeks. But then you’ll experience that the names of the shows start to blend into one another and that you forgot the name of an exercise or who taught you it.

It can be really valuable to keep track of some of these things as you go along just by taking a few nots in a journal or even in the notes on your phone just so you can refresh your mind later with who you saw and what you did. There are so many improv exercises that I think that would help me to perform better or may be fun to teach and play with others in rehearsal or whilst teaching. And whilst many of these things will evolve and take on a life of their own it’s always worth keeping a note of where you learned something or the steps of an exercise, or even which performer you met when they were doing which show. Many performers will have company social media pages and be more than happy to connect with people who they’ve worked with or audience who have watched their shows so keeping notes will help you keep track so you can see them again the next time they’re performing in your area.

So there you have it, a few tips for having a great time at your first improv festival. For more articles do check out the Improv and Comedy Section of the site, and also keep your eyes peels for the next Extreme Improv Festival either online or in real life.
