4: Take the Opportunity to Visit Local Points of Interest
OK, so maybe you’re attending your local festival and attending local places is just attending the places you always go to. But often improvisers will travel to festivals and whilst it’s great to be in the workshops all day and the theatre all night, it’d also be a great idea to visit some places in the area whilst you’re there.
If you’re new to the area it’d be a good idea to look up some places that may be fun or cool to visit and plan your trip, whilst also leaving time to explore or take up some recommendations from others you meet at the festival be they organiser or from another local performer.
This said it’s important that you always exercise caution and safety when exploring new places or if you do wish to team up with others you have just met at the festival. Just because you’re in the same workshop as someone else doesn’t mean they’re instantly your best friend so always be sensible when making plans with strangers, and if you have any concerns talk to others or the organisers about it. You’ll sometimes find that the organisers have put together some non improv based activities and opportunities to explore the area in a group which will always be a safer option then going it alone in unknown towns.
I’ve often used improv festivals as my excuse to visit places I’ve always wanted to go to in other countries and seeing these new sights has the added bonus of giving you more knowledge and experience to help inform your scene work in improvisation.
