5: Super Metroid
Whenever people say that Nintendo just do childish games just point them in the direction of this gem. Dark, moody, complicated and adult. Long before we had Master Chief we had Samus in this classic which is a favourite for players to this day. This is 16-bit perfection, and arguably still the best Metroid game out there!
4: Super Mario All-Stars
Quite possibly the best value cartridge you can get for the Super Nintendo, Super Mario All-Stars non features all three of the Super Mario Bros games from the NES, but it also features the previously unreleased in the west Super Mario Bros The Lost Levels, which was the super challenging original Super Mario Bros 2 game that only came out in Japan. And if all that wasn’t good enough, the games now feature a save feature and updated graphics to be in line with what a Super NES Super Mario game could look like.
3: Super Mario World
A common theme on this list is that Nintendo created brilliant first entries of franchises on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and then perfected the formula as far as could be imagined on the more powerful Super Nintendo.
Super Mario World is a natural continuation of the work they did on Super Mario Bros 3, but with a huge amount of levels that are filled with the brilliant characters from the Mushroom Kingdom and the introduction of Mario’s dinosaur pal Yoshi, this is a an example of Nintendo launching a system with an absolute hit!
2: The Legend of Zelda A Link To The Past
A game very frequently at the top of these lists, but only in second place in this one. But don’t allow the silver spot fool you that this is anything other a masterpiece of a game.
A Link to the Past takes the Zelda franchise back to the top down roots of the original game after the side scrolling action of Zelda 2. This was definitely a smart move for the series which is all about exploring every nook and cranny of the vast game world for secrets, and it’s very easy to get lost in the magic of the game’s setting of Hyrule.
With a variety of items and weapons that help you find new areas to progress through the game this Zelda game perfected the sense of discovery which the series is still known for to this day. It’s a large game with some tricky puzzles and tough bosses to beat, but you never feel that the game unfairly punishes you and the game always drives you to experiment and gives you a huge sense of achievement as you work towards the end of this epic adventure.
1: Donkey Kong Country 2
This will be a controversial choice for many…but for others they will know this was always destined to be the answer.
Donkey Kong Country 2 is an incredible game that took everything that was so great about the original and improved upon it. It’s filled with incredible imagination, both in terms of gameplay and the world of the game which has all kinds of weird and wonderful characters.
Every level is dripping with detail, and the graphics still hold up to this day. And more importantly, the game is just as fun to play today as it was way back in 1995. Every level is filled with great imagination and variety which always keeps you on your toes. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest is a game has a true epic feel and is a game from Rare at their absolute best!
