10: Star Fox
This game was revolutionary when it came out, and though it has simple graphics, it’s use of 3D polygons were quite unlike anything else on the Super Nintendo.
Star Fox (or Star Wing as it was called in the UK) is one of the most iconic games from the era, and although the series has had several games since this initial release many fans are torn between this and it’s Nintendo 64 follow up as to which is the best.
9: Super Mario Kart
Who would have thought that putting Mario and friends into go-karts would become one of the biggest sellers on every Nintendo system? The original was the best example of a racing game the SNES had to offer with addictive multiplayer and a fun single player game which put the emphasis on the personalities of each racer and the wacky weapons you could use to take the lead and win the gold!
Super Mario Kart perhaps doesn’t hold up as well compared to later editions of the series, but as the game that launched the cartoon kart racing genre this is still a damn fun game to play.
8: Final Fantasy 3 (Final Fantasy 6)
Most of you will know the story, but just in case you don’t, Final Fantasy 6 was released as Final Fantasy 3 in the west as it was the third one released outside of Japan, and they obviously felt it would confuse people if the first game released was Final Fantasy IV.
This game was the pinnacle of the series before things went 3D on the Playstation with Final Fantasy 7, and whilst that game may have catapulted the series to worldwide fame there are many players who say that time has been kinder to Final Fantasy 6 which perhaps holds up as the best of the early Final Fantasy RPGs.
7: Super Street Fighter 2
Street Fighter 2 is one of the most important and influential games of all time. It’s also one of the games that has had the most revisions and re-releases of all time. On the Super Nintendo there are three iterations of Street Fighter 2, and whilst some will say that the extra speed of Street Fighter 2 Turbo would top it for them, we’ll go for the extra characters or ‘new challengers’.
Brilliant game play that is still huge fun today, especially in multiplayer for those kind of one on one battles that will make you miss the days of pumping coins into the arcade originals.
6: Donkey Kong Country
This game wowed the public when it was first shown. Pre-dating CGI animated features like Toy Story people thought this was a Nintendo 64 game and jaws dropped when they heard it was on the Super Nintendo.
Donkey Kong was back and was the hero of this adventure with his pal Diddy in this big adventure which gave the mighty Mario a run for his money and was the start of a glorious era of great games from Rareware.
