Resident Evil

Resident Evil Box Shot for GameCube - GameFAQs640 × I’m sure before this game there were other games which could be considered remakes, and off the top of my head the retelling of the Star Fox story in Star Fox 64 fits the bill as an early remake. But Resident Evil remake was the game that really showed the world the potential of a video game remake.

This was the most stunning looking game of the generation with animated 2D backdrops looking photo realistic and allowing rain on windows, lightning to illuminate the rooms with flashes and shadows to dance around the screen in ways that had never been possible in the past. And with the locations being 2D images it meant that all of the GamCube’s resources could be poured into the character models. Even to this day the 3D characters and monsters hold up pretty damn well.

The story remained largely the same (unlike the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes) but added in extra areas and a new subplot which had been cut from the original Playstation game. The script was also improved upon and although better this game lost the hilarity and charm of the bad scripting and translation in the original game.

Gameplay wise the game gained the quick turn from later games and added in defensive weapons and the requirement to burn zombies or risk them coming back as the famed ‘crimson head zombies’ which were basically a hunter level enemy.
