DCEU fans have been waiting a long time, but the wait is finally almost over. If new reports are indeed accurate the film, which was previously announced as being released in four parts will now instead come out as one massive 4 hour movie.
The prospect of a Lord of the Rings Extended Cut length sit to watch the Snyder Cut may seem a little much for some, but there are bound to be countless Snyderverse fans who will be thrilled that the movie will be released in one go, rather than making us wait to see the whole thing spread out over 4 weeks.
In terms of logic for HBO Max, where the movie will debut this actually makes sense, as you pay for their service in blocks of one month at a time as you do with other streaming services such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. This would mean that with the movie being 4 parts, you’d be able to watch it within one month anyway, so it won’t keep people subscribing for longer to watch the whole series in the same way that Stranger Things does for Netflix.
One thing that will be interesting to see from this change is how the movie is paced and if there are any signs of it having been recently edited with it being intended to be a series. Obviously when the film was first in production for 2017 it was planned as one movie, but if they have recently tinkered with it to make it work in a serialised format they would have needed to have created logical end points for each episode. If I’m the original cut the one hour mark would have come with a scene between Lois Land and Martha Kent saying they miss Clark over a cup of tea that wouldn’t be the most thrilling cliffhanger after all.
It’ll also be interesting to see how the Snyder now works as a 4 hour epic, as obviously it would have never found its way to the cinema at that length in 2017 if it had been released with Zack Snyder’s vision rather than being taken over by Joss Whedon. Let’s hope it’s filled with exciting scenes and revelations that make the extra length worth it and isn’t now just 4 hours filled with padding because they saw the opportunity to release it as an event series.
Either way, we’ll soon all have the verdict as the Justice League Snyder Cut will release on HBO Max in March.
