Tonight’s episode of AEW Dynamite is bound to be a ‘big show’ now that All Elite Wrestling have announced that they have signed Paul Wight to a multi year contract.
Wight, who formally wrestled for the WWE as The Big Show was announced to have agreed to terms with AEW on the company’s twitter account earlier today.
Whilst they did confirm that Wight would be returning to the ring in AEW, they also announced that he would serve as a commentator on a new AEW show called AEW Dark: Elevation. With this introduction into AEW it can be expected that Wight won’t wrestle a full time schedule, and may be reserved for big shows (pun intended).
This news certainly came out of nowhere as The Big Show has been on WWE television as recently as earlier this year, and there were no whispers that he may depart the WWE. It would seem that the WWE and Big Show couldn’t agree on money and undoubtably as a big star who is instantly recognisable this is a significant get for AEW to have a former world champion jump ship.
In terms of in ring opponents there are many people within AEW who would be great to see Paul Wight go up against who we have never seen him wrestle before. Brian Cage and Lance Archer jump to mind as big men who could size up against Wight, but there would also be milage in seeing Wight face off with smaller guys who he could dominate and make Wight look great against if he is starting to wind things down in the ring.
This is the first time that Paul Wight has used his real name in wrestling since he first jumped ship from WCW where he was known as The Giant, to the WWE who later renamed him The Big Show.
