Save Room: Steam Game Review

Save Room: Steam Game Review

Available now on Steam (version reviewed) and also on Nintendo Switch Xbox and PlayStation, Save Room is a puzzle game inspired by the item management system of Resident Evil 4. It’s made by Brazillian indie game developer Fractal Projects.

If you’ve never played that game, allow me to briefly explain the concept. On the left half of the screen, you are shown an inventory storage space which is depicted by a number of connected blocks. On the right-hand side of the screen you are shown items you have to fit into the storage blocks. Different items are different sizes and therefore require larger or smaller amounts of blocks to store.

Items include things like guns and ammo, and health items like first aid sprays, chicken eggs and fish. The guns in particular may have differing shapes which when trying to arrange them to fit into the storage blocks will mean you are effectively doing a jigsaw puzzle or fitting blocks around each other like in Tetris.

This may not sound like the most riveting idea for a game, but it is strangely addictive. The game takes further cues from Resident Evil 4 in that you will need to reload weapons to reduce the amount of ammo that fits into the storage, and you’ll have to consume health items for the same purpose if you are displayed to have low health.

The graphics of the game look pretty much like they came straight out of Resident Evil 4, and the music also fits the tone of Resident Evil save rooms. There are also sound effects of rain which give a greater sense of atmosphere.

The biggest downside to the game is that it is so short. With only 40 levels this almost feels like a proof of concept where you could believe that the creators didn’t want to make hundreds of levels in case the idea of a item box sorting game didn’t work. Hopefully there will be an update with more levels in the future.

Conclusion

For what the game is, and the fact that it’s a low-cost release I’d recommend the game for fans of Resident Evil 4 (and 8) or anyone who enjoys quirky puzzle games. Heck if you like vacations and always get a kick of packing as much as possible into your suitcase and hand luggage you’ll probably get a kick out of this. I’ve given the game 3 out of 5 as it’s a good game, but will hold off giving it more as it’s so short. Hopefully they’ll do an update for the game and add more levels in the future.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
