Capcom held their online Resident Evil Showcase last night, and there were many announcements made as part of the event. This is in addition to new trailers for the upcoming Netflix animated series Resident Evil Infinite Darkness, as well as the main focus being on Resident Evil Village. Read on as we break down all of the announcements and give reactions to the news!
New Trailer for Resident Evil Village
The main part of the presentation was a new trailer for Resident Evil 8. The game, which will release for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Steam and Stadia on May 7th continues in the first person style first introduced in Resident Evil 7. You’ll also be playing as the protagonist of RE7 Ethan Winters once again as he explores a village filled with werewolves and other nasties in an attempt to rescue his daughter Rose.
Chris Redfield from past games in the series is shown to be back in the new game, but the trailers we have seen so far show Chris to be some kind of antagonist to Ethan this time. I’m sure this friction won’t be as simple as Chris now being a baddie, and that he will be more friend than foe.
The focus of the story seems to be around a new villain known as Mother Miranda, who we assume offered some kind of protection over the village from the werewolves, but something has changed and now the village is being overrun.
The game looks incredible, and whilst PS4 and Xbox One versions will be available, it looks as if the game will take full advantage of what the PS5 and Xbox Series X are able to put out graphically. The trailer hinted at what may be going on with the story but we didn’t learn any major new revelations compared to the previous showcase of the game. There’s still a very tall woman and potentially witches involved, Chris still seemed on the dark side, and most importantly there are werewolves in Reisdent Evil!
New Demos
There will be new demos of the game available to try at various points in the next couple of weeks leading up to the release of the game. Playstation players will get more opportunity than players on other systems, and whilst this is clearly a deal struck between Capcom and Sony for this, it does feel a little unfair to Xbox and PC players. It’s not as if an Xbox player is going to rush out and buy a PS5 just to play a demo after all.
Playstation players will be able to try 30 minute demos this weekend April 17th-18th set in the game’s village, and next weekend April 24th-25th set in the game’s castle.
A 60 minute demo will be available on all platforms on May 1st and 2nd. We’ll be sure to cover as many of the demos as we can on the site and will have videos and podcasts covering the demos here on the site and on the Extreme Improv YouTube Channel.
New Live Action Resident Evil Movie Wraps Shooting
In a short note in the showcase, it was said that the new live action reboot of the Resident Evil movie series has finished filming in Canada and that they were now working on the CGI monsters. The movie, which wasn’t given an exact release date, will be a much closer retelling of the story form the games than the previous film series. It is believed that the movie will retell the events of Resident Evil 1 and 2.
New Trailer for Resident Evil Infinite Darkness Netflix Series
In July we’ll get a new animated series on Netflix that will focus on the zombie outbreak that leads up to the events of Resident Evil 6. The trailer showed that the main characters of the film would be Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy, who are again paired together after first starring together in the Resident Evil 2 game. Set at the White House we will learn the fate President Graham, who is Ashley from Resident Evil 4’s father as the zombies take over.
Resident Evil 4 Announced For Oculus Quest 2
Months ago there were rumours that a new version of Residnet Evil 4 were in development, and whilst this may not be the full Resident Evil 2/3 remakes that many players were hoping for, this is still very exciting. Resident Evil 4 is coming to VR on the Oculus Quest 2. The game will be played in first person and will bring about updates and changes to the game play to make it more interactive than ever before.
Without knowing for certain, it certainly did appear that this game was some kind of collaboration between Capcom and Facebook to bring the game to Oculus, so it may be that this doens’t release for other platforms such as PSVR. This would be a shame as obviously Resident Evil 7 debuted the series in VR on the PS4. Perhaps this is a timed exclusive, but we’ll have to wait and see what Capcom have gone in store for us when we get more details on the game.
Watch out for lots more Resident Evil content coming to the site this year as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Resident Evil. We recently reviewed Resident Evil 4. And check out our gaming reviews over on the Extreme Improv Xstreamed YouTube Channel.
