In the spirit of April Fools Day, and following our 2022 April Fools fake trailer for a remake of the Atari E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial game, we’ve taken things a step further with a fake trailer of a movie based on the making of the same game. With the Tetris Movie having just released and there also being movies about the invention of the Blackberry phone and Nike Shoes, it felt fitting that this could be a real film someone may decide to make some day!

The parody trailer re-imagines the true life story of the game as an action-comedy. The true story however is one which certainly could be the basis for a film, so if Steven Spielberg is reading this please get in touch and let’s make this happen!

The real life story saw Atari get the rights to make a video game of E.T. in 1982 and only have six weeks to get the whole thing done if it was going to be released in time for Christmas. Atari then hilariously released more carts of the game than there were Atari systems in people’s homes and when they got the game they thought it wasn’t good and took it back to shops.

This along with the poorly received Atari 2600 version of the arcade game Pac-Man are seen as major contributors to the crash of the video game industry in the early 80s. It’s crazy to think that the world of video games actually was at risk of coming to an end and seen as a fad until it was revived by Nintendo with the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985. Even then they kinda had to stealth release the system with a robot to make people think it was a toy.

The story takes an even more wild turn when thousands or millions of copies of the game was buried in a landfill in New Mexico just to get shot of them. This was believed to be an urban myth for many years until a documentary about the game uncovered that they were in fact buried there!

The trailer stars the cast of the Extreme Improv XStreamed Comedy Show with David Pustansky stepping into the role of Howard Scott Warshaw who created the game, and Dave Green and DB Frick playing Atari Executives. Performers from around the world contributed to make this trailer with scenes being filmed from across the UK, various states in America and even France and Sri Lanka!
