Marvel’s Loki Episode 5 Review

Marvel’s Loki Episode 5 Review

What a penultimate episode! There were more Loki’s than you could shake Thor’s Hammer at, lots of Easter eggs for MCU and Marvel Comics fans to pick through and we’re all geared up for a grand finale in the final episode.

This episode picked up where things had left off last week with Loki confronted by several Loki variants who we now know to be Alligator Loki, Classic Loki, Boastful Loki and Kid Loki.

These God’s of Mischief have all been zapped to these wasteland planet at the end of time and are trying to survive, and despite our Loki wanting to recruit the, to help him battle the TVA, they soon enough prove themselves to be as untrustworthy as all Loki’s usually turn out to be.

Boastful Loki, had formed an alliance with a gang of other Loki’s to overthrow Kid and Classic Loki by teaming up with ‘President Loki’ who is one of only a couple of Loki’s to be played by Tom Hiddleston. It’s interesting to see that most Loki variants can be totally different looking people, but that a couple seem like they have branched off from our Loki’s timeline. This certainly will help explain when we get multiple Spider-men actors on screen why they don’t all look alike. Variants can be other people, but just contain the same energy maybe??

That would certainly explain why we have an Alligator Loki and why we also got to see a glimpse of Thor who was a Frog. Although this may be that Loki transformed him into a frog rather than that this Thor variant was always a frog. This was one of many Easter eggs in the episode, but one that has got tons of people talking online.

The war of the Loki’s didn’t last long as whilst Boastful Loki betrayed Kid and Classic to help President Loki, President Loki was instantly betraying Boastful Loki. This didn’t last long as the rest of the gang of Loki’s then betrayed President Loki who swiftly had his hand bitten off by Alligator Loki and then the gang of Loki’s all turned on each other. It makes sense that all the Loki’s would do this, but felt super rushed and this one short scene could have been the basis of an entire episode of they had wanted.

Away from Loki, Sylvie was last seen at the TVA, but soon decides to prune herself to end up at the same wasteland as Loki at the end of the universe. With the threat of the giant Lost style smoke monster about to eat her, she is saved by a conveniently appearing Mobius in a pizza car (there’s so many convenient moments and questions of why or how things happen it’s best just to ignore them) and they go on the hunt for Loki.

When Mobius and Sylvie catch up with the team of Lokis Sylvie quickly squashes Loki’s plan of killing the smoke monster and plots to enchant it. This leads to the biggest SFX show of the series yet as Classic Loki creates a whole city to grab the attention of the smoke monster to give Sylvie and Loki the chance to enchant and nullify it. Unfortunately they only manage to do it 10 seconds after Classic Loki is killed…or at least that’s how things appear. Classic Loki had earlier said that he had escaped Thanos by creating the most convincing illusion, so if Richard E Grant’s instantly classic Classic Loki is wanted back they can easily do so by saying his death was an illusion.

A lesson our hero Lokis learned from Classic Loki is that they are potentially much more powerful than they realised and this enables Loki to discover his ability to enchant and Sylvie to enhance her own ability. The episode wraps with the gateway to the final challenge now in front of them. Hopefully next week we’ll find out the true identity of the big bad of the series, but at this stage it feels like it will just be another Loki. Maybe it will be the oft rumoured Kang the Conqueror, but who knows. So far these Disney Plus series have hesitated to give us a major view of what’s next for the MCU as if they are afraid to put anything essential in the TV shows and not just on film.

Conclusion

This episode was great, but there were moments that felt rushed or sprinkled with a huge dose of plot convenience. But whilst it’s been as enjoyable as it has with Classic and Alligator Lokis stealing scenes (no mean feat with Tom Hiddleston also on screen) this is a freight train which is now powering through to it’s final destination and we’ll be right on it with the finale and as always we’ll be back with a in depth review and break down!

Rating: 4 out of 5.
