Marvel in the Multiverse of Messiness and the Failure of the MCU – A Deep Dive

And then of course there is the biggest cameo in Chris Evans returning to the MCU for the first time since Avengers End Game…and then being killed off quite quickly.
Unlike Patrick Stewart being wiped out seeming like disrespect or the many killings of tony Stark lessening the end of Iron Man’s story, the use of Evans in Deadpool and Wolverine was well done as it was the surprise that was also not at all surprising.
They did the fan service of finally bringing Evans into the MCU as the Human Torch who he had played in two Fox produced Fantastic Four movies before he ever played Captain America.
His quick death was something of a joke point, but that fit the tone of what the Deadpool movies have always been, and whilst I would have liked to see him do a bit more cool stuff before getting killed, I was satisfied that they took the one main MCU actor to appear in this film and had him as a different character that made sense and then gave much more reverence to the likes of Blade and Electra.

But it is still of note that once again, before we’ve even had a Fantastic Four movie, we’ve now seen two of the four Fantastic Four be slaughtered with no issues before their debut movie into the MCU…may be a mistake in the long run in making these charcaters seem special.

Oh and the film did give us several variants of Deadpool and Wolverine played by both their main actors and cameo actors.
In the case of Deadpool having Matthew McConaughey voice Deadpool is fun,
but we don’t actually see the actor in the role.
The big one was a one scene appearance of Henry Cavil who is famed for playing Superman in the DCEU as a variant Wolverine.
There was lots of real life references in the scene to acknowledge that it was the Cavilrene, but in the short scene he’s also shown to be a bad ass and if they wanted to they could totally bring him back in a more serious way in the future in this capacity.

This was Multiverse done right, but there is the issue that after five years plus of the multiverse being introduced the only times that Marvel have done it right has been in films where MCU characters don’t really interact with the actors and characters from other worlds.
The Spider-Man characters were in their Spider-verse bubble and Deadpool and Wolverine kept things in a Fox bubble.
The argument could be that all this that I have discussed has been in the pursuit of laying the table for the next Avengers films to bring all these together but they’ve done such a slow job of things with all but two being near complete misses, that the audience aren’t excited for the multiverse anymore.

They can fix things and as soon as we have Robert Downey Jr back as a variant Tony Stark/Victor Von Doom and we get Tom Holland’s Spider-Man sharing the screen with Deadpool and Captain Falcon throwing his shield at Magneto and Wolverine fighting Hulk properly…we’ll forgive them and just enjoy the ride.

But considering how epic and well done the Infinity Saga was for around twenty movies and over ten years,
Marvel have now spent five years and at the time of making this video twelve movies and countless tv episodes seemingly without a solid direction and constant tease and no delivery,
the MCU and their inability to smoothly and successfully bring the worlds of the Fox,
Sony Spider-Man and their own multiverses together has to be one of the greatest cinematic downfalls in history.

I’m counting on them to turn things around and hopefully in a big and consistent way.
