Sega held a special video presentation very similar to the Nintendo Direct series, to show off many new projects based on Sonic the Hedgehog. You can see the full presentation in the video below:
With a jam packed video, new announcements included Sonic Colors Ultimate which is a HD remake of the classic Wii game, cross over colloborations with several other games such as Two Point Hospital and Tokyo 2020 Olympics game, and that a new Sonic Origins collection will be out next year.
The Sonic Origins Collection will include new features and enhancements to the Mega Drive/Genesis classics Sonic 1, 2, 3 Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic CD. This will be the first time that Sonic 3 and Knuckles will be rereleased in several years as the games have been dogged with music rights issues relating to the late Michael Jackson.
Whilst it is exciting to get the announcement of this collection, it feels a mixed bad as although 3 and Knuckles are back and brilliantly we get Sonic CD, this still isn’t as complete a collection as it could be, and has less games then we got in previous Sonic collections during the Gamecube and PS2 era.
In an ideal world, this collection would feature Sonic 1, 2, 3, & Knuckles, Sonic CD, Sonic Spinball, Dr Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, Knuckles Chaotix, and Sonic 3D Blast. If they wanted to take this a step further, some of these could feature on a second collection with the Saturn era Sonic Fighters, Sonic R, and unreleased Sonic X-Treme. But one can dream.
Lastly as you’ll see on the video, Sega teased what appeared to be the next big Sonic adventure game…and boy oh boy wouldn’t it be cool if it were Sonic Adventure 3?!
