5: Super Mario Galaxy
When Super Mario Galaxy came out for the Wii, it was truly the 3D Mario game we’d all hoped would follow up Super Mario 64. It was epic, it went bigger in scale then before by taking Mario into space, and Nintendo added fun with gravity many years before it would become a big part of Mario Kart 8.
Nintendo even deserves extra credit for resisting overusing the Wii Remote in the design of the gameplay in needless ways (we’re looking at you Donkey Kong Country Returns) This game had incredible amounts of imagination, and in many ways revitalised the 3D platformer genre which had started to dwindle after the Gamecube/Xbox/PS2 generation of consoles.
This game recently got a re-release as part of the Super Mario 3D Allstars collection on Switch and with it’s limited window of release will become increasingly hard to find in the future. So if you want to play it on Switch make sure you track down a copy sooner rather than later!
