Food: How to Prepare Roast Chestnuts

One of the great joys of the winter season is that it’s time to roast some chestnuts. Super healthy for you, roast chestnuts are a great treat for anyone wanting some yummy nutty goodness. And the best thing is that they’re easy to prepare!

You have a couple of options for how you want to prep the nuts. Either in the oven or in the microwave. But first thing’s first, you need to prep the chestnuts.

Preparation

Get about 8-15 nuts out on a tray, and get a sharp knife. Now carefully hold each nut and cut into them so that there is a cut into the outer shell. You won’t need to cut the nut in half, so be careful to make sure that you only cut part way through the shell to open up the nut slightly.

As a warning, if you don’t cut into the shell there is a chance a nut could explode during cooking.

Oven

Place the nuts on a metal tray and put into the middle shelf of the oven for 20-30 minutes on a gas mark 4/medium temperature.

Microwave

Place the prepared nuts onto a microwavable plate and heat on full power for 2-3 minutes.

The nuts will be extremely hot cooked in the microwave and the shells will be softer which can make them easier to peel. In my opinion cooking chestnuts in the microwave doesn’t cook them as well as when done in the oven, but certainly makes getting them cooked quicker and easier.

Serve

The chestnuts will be extremely hot so make sure you take caution to let them cool slightly. You’ll need to remove each nut from it’s shell to eat and be careful to remove the thin inner part of the shell if it sticks to the nut.
