28: The Miz vs John Cena – WrestleMania 27
This match was part 1 in the trilogy of the John Cena vs The Rock WrestleMania main event feud. And that does somewhat sum this up. The Rock had been hyped up as the host of WrestleMania 27, returning to the company for the first time in several years, and whilst he was not wrestling on the show, the WWE firmly made the main event all about a feud between Cena and Rocky.
Similar to how Jericho was less important to the WrestleMania 18 main event compared to Stephanie and Triple H, the Miz was an afterthought in this show’s build up. That The Miz was able to walk out still as champion doesn’t make up for the fact that the build up didn’t do what it should have for the match.
27: Yokozuna vs Bret Hart – Wrestlemania 9
Ah, we’re back to WrestleMania 9 here. So as I mentioned earlier in the list, the Hogn vs Yokozuna match that followed this was barely a match, but that cannot be said about this match. As only the second WrestleMania main event to not feature Hulk Hogan (and yes he still had the final match on this show) the WWF followed the same formula that they did with Hogan and had the much smaller Bret Hart wrestle the much bigger heel in a David vs Goliath story. Yokozuna was at the height of his career at this stage, both as a dominant heel, and also for his in ring ability. For a man his size, Yokozuna was agile and able to do so much more than he should have been able to do. Bret Hart, who is arguably the best in ring worker of all time was a master of getting the most out of every opponent and whilst this match didn’t compare with other Bret Hart classics against the British Bulldog or Mr Perfect, was still a good main event.
