32: Chris Jericho vs Triple H – WrestleMania 18
For a wrestler as good as Chris Jericho, it is a crime that this is his only WrestleMania main event. Jericho had become the first ever undisputed World Champion in wrestling history, having won the WCW and WWF world championships in the same night. Because of this, you would have thought that the focus would have been on him going into Mania, but instead the focus was firmly on Triple H, who had returned from injury to win the Royal Rumble, and his feud with his wife Stephanie McMahon.
The match being more focused on Steph vs Triple H didn’t help things, but that wasn’t the only issue. Helmsley had been out for several months and would later admit himself that it wouldn’t be until later in the summer when he feuded with a returning Shawn Michaels that he fully felt back to being the old Triple H he was before his injury. Oh and then there was a little match on the card between Hulk Hogan and the Rock that went on before the main event and got a crowd reaction quite unlike any other match in history before it. The fact that Triple H and Jericho had to follow the return to WrestleMania of Hulk Hogan meant that the main event didn’t stand a chance to compete and the audience felt flat as they weren’t as invested and had already worn themselves out on the Great One and the Hulkster.
31: Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns WrestleMania 34
Yes this is the one that didn’t have any surprise interruptions (we’ll get to that later). Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 34 was overall a good match for the pair, but it’s impossible to watch the match and not take in that the WWE were doing exactly what the fans didn’t want. Lesnar was viewed as a constant world champion who never wrestled on weekly shows and often didn’t even show up for Raw. Roman Reigns was still being booed in protest for the WWE not pushing Daniel Bryan years earlier. All this combined for a lacklustre feel to the main event.
