Master System

The Master System has a slightly unusual place in gaming history and it kinda depends on where you come from. If you were in the US you’ll be aware of the machine, but you’ll probably just know it as the machine that Sega put out before the Genesis. If you live in Europe you’re more likely to see this as the 8bit console of choice that you had over the NES which was less supported here than in the rest of the world. If you live in Brazil you may still be playing this where it has been supported for years and years after the rest of the world moved on to other consoles.

The Master System in my opinion always had better graphics than the NES. It was a shame that the Master System controller only had two buttons which gave it less scope for controls than the NES with the added Start and Select buttons, but otherwise I saw the Sega machine as more advanced. Of course, this was at a stage of the console wars where Nintendo used dictator like tactics to restrict who would develop for the NES and so it would be common that games would either be exclusive to the NES, or when games did come out for both the NES and Master System, the two versions would in fact be entirely different games. This would eventually change, and did have the upside that as a gamer you could get two different games if you had both consoles.

The highlights on the Master System include Sonic, Sonic 2 and the best Master System Sonic game…Sonic Chaos. Lucky Dime Caper starring Donald Duck is also great on the Master System. You can also get great versions of Ghouls and Ghosts, Golden Axe, Castle of Illusion, Moonwalker and Streets of Rage. Once again, if you’re a player in Brazil you could get the region exclusive version of Street Fighter 2 for the machine out there.
