Seeeegaaaaa! The famous sound many gamers would hear when they powered up some of our favourite video games growing up.
Nowadays we live in a world where the console wars are much less a war, and much more a non-battle where Microsoft games appear on Nintendo consoles, and Sony and their competitors will send supportive tweets to each other. But this wasn’t always the way. Home video games have been around since the 1970s, but the golden era for many fans came from the mid-1980s and lasted throughout the 1990s. Things are very different now, but for many, the best time to be a gamer was during the time period when Sega was creating consoles.
There was something special about this era that was lost when Sega conceded the console war in 2001, which the industry has never really recaptured. Sega consoles and games had more focus on arcade style experiences, the marketing oozed attitude, and the Sega era made players choose an alliance to a system that has never really been replicated. Players would debate Sonic vs Mario, and the benefits of ‘blast processing’ even though it didn’t mean anything.
Today Sega pump out Sonic games here and there and a few other safe franchises, with occasional call backs to their retro properties. But in our list today we will rank every main Sega console that they released to celebrate their glory days during the bit wars.
For clarity, this list doesn’t include non-Sega produced consoles which have been released by other companies such as the clone consoles by AT Games. But without further ado, let’s get started!
