The WWE shocked the wrestling world last night with a dramatic end to the 2021 Royal Rumble event. Edge, who came out of retirement and shocked the world last year during the 2020 Royal Rumble did it again by going the distance and winning the 2021 Rumble after entering at number 1.
This was a huge shock as many had Daniel Bryan, BIg E and Bobby Lashey as hot favourites. But it was also a shocker because after coming out of retirement last year Edge has only wrestled a couple of matches. WWE must have a lot of confidence in the Rated R Superstar to take the risk that he could not only go the distance tonight, but carry the main event of WrestleMania.
With Drew McIntyre defeating Bill Goldberg to keep the WWE Championship in a needlessly short match last night, and Roman Reigns retaining the Universal Title against Kevin Owens, the question will be who will Edge target for the the main event of WrestleMania. Smart money would seem to point towards Edge vs Roman at this stage, and maybe WWE will finally get a battle of the spears after Goldberg vs Reigns got cancelled at last years show.
In the women’s Rumble Bianca Belair was the last woman standing after last eliminating Rea Ripley and last year’s winner Charlotte Flair. Bianca is a perfect example of a rising star who winning a Royal Rumble will elevate and become a bigger star for having won. Who she faces at WrestleMania will certainly be the question on a lot of minds this week as we head into Raw and Smackdown.
In a slight moment of controversy it could be argued that Bianca was eliminated as it certainly appeared that both of her feet touched the floor outside the ring, but the referees didn’t count that she was eliminated. The WWE could acknowledge this controversy to further storylines, or alternatively just ignore it as they seemed to have during the event last night.
