How to cancel Odeon MyLimitless…
Odeon, and other cinemas now offer these unlimited passes where by you pay a monthly subscription and get to watch as many of the films that they’re showing each day as you would like. This sounds great, doesn’t it?
Well, before you sign up, there are a few things I’d like to make people aware of, as their offering isn’t quite as customer friendly as they first make it seem.
I signed up in November 2023 as I saw that the cost of going to see The Marvels (yes I’m the one that went to see that film) was almost the same cost as what it’d work out for one month of their unlimited movie price. So, after thinking about signing up to their unlimited offer for a few years, I decided to bite the bullet and actually do it.
Now, I hadn’t been to the movies much throughout 2023, so I decided I’d just sign up for the three month option. That is the minimum term for which you can sign up. You can’t just get one month alone, and you can then either have three months and continue to pay monthly or sign up for a year all at once and get it a bit cheaper.
Roll forward to today, and after having been to the cinema ten times in three months I decided not to continue my subscription. I figured I may do another three months again in the future, but for me, for now, I was happy to end it with what I’d paid for.
And this is where Odeon really started to seem scummy to me.
First of all, you can go on the app, and it’ll have a button on your subscription if you want to renew. One click and you’ll have it all laid out how to continue giving them your money.
But…if you want to cancel, there is no apparent way to do so on the app, or that I could find on the website. So I searched ‘how to cancel your Odeon MyLimitless subscription’ and I found a page. Typical. These big companies always bury how to stop paying them money don’t they?
But then…If you want to cancel, you have to talk to an advisor. Why? This is needlessly time consuming. But I didn’t even get to speak to an advisor at first, as using their ‘live’ chat first makes you speak to a robot. This is garbage practices where they want people to get frustrated and give up, or say they’ll try again later and then forget whilst still paying.
So, after several minutes of this, I finally get to speak to a human…but these days, maybe it was still AI.
It was at this point that I’m told that there is a 30 day notice period that you have to give, and that I’d still be charged for the next month payment. This is despite that it said my renewal date is tomorrow.
These big companies need calling out on this kind of thing. I’m sure they’ll all say it’s in their 50,000 word list of terms and conditions, but nobody reads those, and nor should they have to just to get basic info.
The info on my account page was clear that my subscription ran until mid February and that included the renewal date. But this was bogus. The renewal date is actually 30 days before what is listed, as if you don’t let them know before the final payment they will insist on taking two final payments. The minimum term of three months is actually four unless you cancel before you have reached your third month.
There are several companies who do scummy tactics like this, but there are also lots that don’t. So, if you’ve been caught out by Odeon or others who do things like this, let your friend know. I generally was quite happy with seeing a bunch of films for three months and would have happily signed up again in the future, but by being purposely unclear, the Odeon Cinema chain has made me wary of them and damaged trust.
And as it is, I did ask for and got an email confirmation that my subscription has been cancelled, but the email and my account doesn’t show the end date for which my subscription is active until. So, I will have to monitor the situation to make sure they don’t try to extend or take further payments, but that they also don’t cut short the extra month I’ve paid for as my account just says it ends 03/24, where it should say 15/03/24.
I’ll enjoy seeing some more films for the next month even though I didn’t plan to or want to, but this isn’t the point. Odeon Cinemas – I may go to your movie theatres, and may even eat your popcorn, but you are officially called out on this one. Clean up your messaging and make your services as friendly to leave as they are to join. The films get various stars, your service with these tactics gets one and a half…
