Here’s a thought…do you think that the Evercade Cartridges being named after the developers or publishers actually does them a disservice from a marketing perspective?
I know most people interested in the Evercade may be into their retro games and have an idea about developers and their game libraries already, but for the general public does hearing Irem collection mean anything? If players saw R-Type in the title they may remember that game from years ago, but Irem didn’t mean anything to me when I heard it.
I still think of it as the Dizzy Collection and not the Oliver Twins Collection.
Namco and Capcom have spent a lot of years putting their company name into the titles of their releases. We have Namco Museum and people know to expect Pac-Man, but would it be better to call it Pac-Man and Pals? Or even just the Pac-Man Collection and put on the box it features Pac-Man and bonus games including Dig Dug? This seems to be the approach with the Arcade 1Up releases. The Pac-Man or Street Fighter 2 machines also feature other games but don’t list them in the title. They’re just seen as bonus games.
We’ve had Capcom Vs SNK for years, but it never had the same ring to it as X-Men Vs Street Fighter. That name tells us why we should care.
I’d argue there aren’t many companies where the company name holds enough weight to be the draw. Capcom Collection has some weight to it, and you’d probably hear that and imagine it will include the lights of Street Fighter, Final Fight and Mega Man. But what if you got the Capcom Collection and it was entirely Mega Man games? Or it was just Resident Evil and Dino Crisis games? The Resident Evil Collection sounds a lot more appealing than the Capcom Collection.
Evercade have had both a Worms Collection and a Team 17 Collection. The funny thing is that both of these collections are technically Team 17 Collections, but they are not both Worms Collections.
A Sega Collection may include not include Sonic games, but a Sonic Collection would have to. But how many of you would pick up a full priced PS5 game that was called ‘Sega Game’ instead of ‘Sonic Frontiers’?
Companies like Sega, Capcom, and Square-Enix all hold a lot of weight from just their name, but Morphcat Collection or Interplay Collection won’t mean a lot to a lot of people.
I think Blaze need to find a way to put a greater emphasis on more games that are on the individual collections. How about Street Fighter 2 and The Capcom Collection? Or Earthworm Jim and Pals? The Evercade has built a community around fans who buy games no matter what, but this is preaching to the converted. Would it help get more players interested to have the big names of games on the front of the box? Let us know what you think in the comments!
