Run is a movie about a mother and daughter where very quickly you start to realise that there is something unusual about their relationship.
Starring Sarah Paulson as the mother of Chloe, a teenage girl who suffers from many disabilities and is played by Keira Allen.
Chloe wants to go to university and have a normal life, but by chance one day notices that the medication she is given doesn’t have her name on this. This sets the film down a path of suspicion and suspense as Chloe tries to uncover the truth of what her mother is really up to.
The film plays with camera angles and lighting to add a creepy vibe that reminded me of the Stephen King film Misery. Partly because both feature a protagonist in a wheel chair who is desperately trying to do things which they don’t want their companion to be aware of.
Paulson turns in a great performance as the overbearing mother and at times seems a real threat to the believable and likeable Allen, who you really route for throughout.
The film doesn’t do anything really new for the type of thriller it is, but it doesn’t need to. It’s just a good example and plays it safe with its balance of menace, and tension.
Without giving spoilers I was a little let down by their choice for the ending of the film which I thought seemed like someone had a clever idea, but that it didn’t really land well for me or fit the characters they’d built up through the film. This is only a minor point in what was otherwise a fun suspense thriller to watch.
