Is the Sony Spider-Man Live Action Marvel Universe the biggest disaster in Superhero movie history?
After the Amazing Spider-Man didn’t perform as well as they wanted, Sony made a deal with Disney to have Spider-Man join the MCU.
But along the way Sony would also do their own Spidey related movies.
The awesome animated Into the Spider-verse films, and then the Venom-verse with their intention to be to eventually get to the villain team up movie, The Sinister Six…Well we’ve now had three Venom movies which felt like they dipped in quality with each one, and they didn’t start all that great to begin with, Morbius, Madame Web and finally, at the time of writing, Kraven the Hunter.
Somehow along the way, Sony managed to make the deal that at the end of Venom 2 we’d see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, and Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock would be sucked into the MCU.
This led straight into the biggest post EndGame MCU movie, Spider-Man No Way Home where a bunch of past Sony Spider-Men villains teamed up against all three live action Spider-Men…except Tom Hardy only showed up for a post credits scene and then left a blob of Venom symbiote which has never been seen since.
Building off the expanded Disney Marvel deal, Sony then brought the MCU Vulture played by Michael Keaton, into the Venom-verse, or at least I think they did. He showed up in a post credits scene in Morbius…
Was Morbius in the same universe as Venom? I guess it was as Morbius at one point joked and said ‘we are Venom’ which was something Morbius would have had zero way of knowing was a Venom saying at all…
But Michael Keaton’s Vulture suggested he and Morbius team up because of Spider-Man, which I don’t think Morbius would know about either…
So, after releasing Morbius as a flop, and then rereleasing it as another flop because the meme ‘It’s Morbin time’ made some people lol, they then released Madame Web.
Madame Web, set in the pasty compared to all the other films did give us a baby Peter Parker, and one that definitely wasn’t any of the previous live action Spider-Men and so therefore the Madame Web movie was completely standalone…why bother?
I mean it did give us three Spider-Women, including Sydney Sweeny suiting up as Spider-Woman, but we only ever saw them as Spider-Woman in a flash forward premonition dream…
Next Venom 3 came and went and was just one big chase sequence that killed Venom and yet still teased a future movie it now looks like we’ll never get.
And finally, there was Kraven the Hunter which is basically Lion Man and one of the least exciting and superhero like superhero films I’ve ever tried to watch.
So, what is next for the Sony Spider-Man franchise? No chance they’ll let Disney get control of Spider-Man back, so it’s only a matter of time until they try to do something Spider-Man again.
