So why did Warner Bros and DC go so cold on Henry Cavill? Once upon a time, Henry was their Superman and even though some of the films he appeared in were seen as less than stellar, no one said that he didn’t play the character well. So what went wrong? Why after announcing Man of Steel 2, did Warner Bros drop him again just a few days later?
We can get the sense that perhaps as a bit of a geek himself, Cavill maybe clashed heads with the people who made The Witcher with him at Netflix, with him wanting the show to be closer to the source material, but was this also the case with DC and Superman?
From what we can tell Cavill and Zack Snyder never had any problems, but DC were determined to not bring Cavill back as Superman. This would explain why we just saw Superman minus his face at the end of Shazam, as they got Cavill’s stunt double to play the role in the Superman costume.
We then later heard that Dwayne the Rock Johnson basically forced the studio to bring back Cavill as he wanted a showdown between Black Adam and Superman. The Rock being the wrestler that he is saw this as the big money match up, rather than having Black Adam against the much lesser known Shazam character.
We then know that when DC and James Gunn recast Superman they did so because they said they wanted to tell a story about Superman when he was younger, and proceeded to start work on Superman, formally known as Superman Legacy. However, this wasn’t an origin story, and hired David Corenswet who looked exactly like Henry Cavill.
So, what was going on and why did Warner Bros and DC really not want to work with Cavill anymore? Surely it wasn’t just because he refused to shave the moustache during the Joss Whedon reshoots of Josstice League?? Or maybe it was.
