Back to the Future Part 2 showed us a bunch of ideas about what the future would be like,
and some of it they got right, and some of it they didn’t.
I don’t blame Back to the Future for getting the things wrong that they did. I blame mankind for not being awesome enough to make all of these things happen by 2015 as the film predicted.
But let’s take a look at things they got right and things they got wrong.
They got flying cars wrong. We don’t have flying cars.
Voice activated TVs. They got that right.
Hoverboards. They got that wrong. And no, those wheely things that don’t hover are not real hoverboards.
Glasses free colour 3D movies. They got that right. The Nintendo 3DS showed that technology was possible, even if we never demonstrated it as well as Jaws 35.
Jaws 35…they got that wrong. As a franchise, Jaws was dead by the 1990s.
80s fuelled nostalgia as seen in the Café 80s. I’d say they got that right.
I’m not sure any other decade gets as much nostalgic love as the 80s has.
Maybe the 50s did, as evidenced by the likes of Happy Days, and well…Back to the Future part 1.
Mini Pizzas that you put into some kind of rehydrating oven. They got that wrong.
Pressing your thumb onto a pad to pay for things. Back to the Future Part 2 got that right.
Two neck ties being fashionable. They got that wrong.
Self-lacing sneakers…these were actually invented in time for 2015, but this was only done so because of the reaching 2015 milestone of Back to the Future part 2. They weren’t common or even really desired by the public.
Self drying jackets…did not happen.
Glasses with video displays did happen…although these are still not really catching on.
Fax machines built into walls didn’t happen. By 2015 fax machines were very much the last dinosaurs waiting to go extinct.
Video calls did happen! Skype and now Zoom made face to face video calling a thing.
Bionic implants as seen that Griff has…was wrong by 2015, but Neurolink by 2025 is making this very much a reality. Just a decade off.
And let’s not forget the two kids Marty meets in Café 80s,
one of whom was Frodo Baggins AKA Eliga Woods who were disappointed to see that the Wild Gunmen Arcade Game required you to use your hands…apparently like a baby’s toy.
Well, yes of course, by 2015 Microsoft’s Xbox game consoles had given us Xbox Kinect which were video games you could control with your body and required no physical controllers. But then again, with Kinect, which by the time of making this discussion is as outdated as the also supposedly futuristic idea of 3D movies, you did actually need to use your hands.
So, who knows, maybe Frodo and I assume Samwise Gamgee were just really into Dance Dance Revolution and only ever played video games with their feet.
