If you’ve been fortunate enough to see 2:22 A Ghost Story on stage, you’ll have seen one of the best modern ghost stories in theatre. But I get why you’re on this page. You want to have the ending explained.
Fine, I’ll do it, but remember not to give spoilers to people who haven’t seen it yet. As it’s a play with a twist, a lot of the enjoyment of seeing it, is working out what is happening as you see it and going along for the ride.
At the end of the show, as we reach 2.22am that the characters have been waiting up for, the police arrive at the house. After a brief period of commotion, they reveal that Sam is dead, and has been since his work trip. It was during this that he had an accident and died, but his spirit found his way back home.
That means that throughout the entire play, the other characters didn’t realise, but Sam, who they were interacting with, was a ghost.
You’re likely to wonder how this makes sense, but if you ever watch it a second time, I’d tell you to pay close attention to everything Sam does and everything Sam doesn’t do. Unless I was mistaken, I don’t think Sam physically touched anything with his hands, which would indicate that he is a ghost.
One of the more ghostly things to happen in the story is that the teddy bear is found covered in spirit, which is a red herring to make you think that it was an action by a ghost, when in reality, this was done by Lauren.
Sam, also went to the shop with Ben, and when they return Ben says that Sam didn’t offer to pay for any of the drinks. This made Sam sound tight, but hides that he couldn’t pay for the drinks as he was a ghost and couldn’t touch them.
There’s loads of clues, including that Sam didn’t drink anything and that the upstairs window being open doesn’t get shut by him.
There are definitely more, but it’s a few months since I saw it. But the point is, to explain the ending, Sam is a ghost and was the entire show. It’s just one of those stories like a few famous ghost movies where a character is a ghost and doesn’t realise they are dead.
